Considered to be a “modern” style of physical combat is a North American martial art form known as Emerson Combat. This “hybrid” martial art is said to have originated from United States of America, and was developed by a martial artist called Ernest Emerson. Apparently, this martial art system is based on 35 years of research put in by Emerson. Furthermore, in this martial art system the fighter uses a weapon as well as bare hands. In addition, this martial art system apart from civilians is also taught to military personnel and to law enforcement agency officers.

a. History/origin of the Emerson Combat:

The Emerson Combat martial art system was first developed by an American martial artist called Ernest Emerson after undertaking 35 years of intense research. Furthermore, he (Emerson) took essential elements belonging to several martial art forms such as Jeet Kune Do, Kyokushin, Shotokan, Brazilian Jujitsu, Boxing, and Escrima and then fused them to create a system which was eventually referred to as the “Emerson Combat Systems”. In addition, this “eclectic” system was first made its presence felt in the American society during the 1980’s.

b. Weapon used in the Emerson Combat:

In this form of combat use “bare hands” as well as weapons are used. The weapons mainly used in this martial art system include knives, sticks, rifles, and at times even a pistol.

c. Technique involved in the Emerson Combat and training availability:

In terms of technique, this form of martial art system is based on two “basic factors”. They are as follows:

  1. Basic Factor One: Essentially relates to the human body’s physiological reaction to stress.
  2. Basic Factor Two: Basically relates to reduced use in gross motor skills.

Furthermore, since this is considered more a form of “self defense” by Emerson himself, moves such as “elbow strike” is frequently used by a fighter. In addition, skills related to “weapon transition” (i.e. a situation where a fighter has to rely on a secondary and not primary weapon) are also taught in this form of martial art system. As for training centers/schools, there are many available especially in the United States of America for all those interested in learning this “hybrid” martial art form.
