GONGKWON YUSULL- SOUTH KOREA

GONGKWON YUSULL, SOUTH KOREA

Comprising elements belonging to the “Hapkido, Hakko-ryu Jujutsu, Judo, and Kyuk Too Ki” is an East Asian martial art form known as Gongkwon Yusul. This “hybrid” martial art form is said to have originated from South Korea, and was created by a martial artist named Kang Jun. Apparently, this martial art form proves to be extremely useful in “free flowing fighting situations” rather than “static” ones. Furthermore, some of the moves used in this form of combat have been inspired from western boxing.

a. History/origin of Gongkwon Yusull:

The Gongkwon Yusull was first created by a South Korean martial artist named Kang Jun. Now, according to Jun Korean martial art forms lay too high an emphasis on the use “striking” techniques such as kicking and punching and less on “sparring”.  Furthermore, it was his mastery in Judo that made him realize that a combat form comprising of “striking and grappling techniques” could prove to be very effective. And so he developed such a martial art form that combined elements belonging to “striking” and “grappling” which was then named Gongkwon Yusull. In addition, it was eventually in 1996 that he then created his own martial art school known as “Combat Style Hap Ki Do” and taught students this unique style of fighting.

b. Weapon used in the Gongkwon Yusull:

Since this combat form involves the use of “grappling” and “striking” techniques the weapon used mainly are the “hands and legs” of the fighter.

c. Technique involved in the Gongkwon Yusull and training availability:
