“Gouging out an opponent’s eye” is the primary objective of a North American martial art form also known as Gouging. This “hybrid” martial art form is said to have originated from the United States of America mainly from rural areas during the 18th and 19th centuries. Furthermore, this form of martial art comprises of brutal techniques that also includes biting. In addition, this form of combat was traditionally fought in order to defend “honour”, and was mainly practiced within economically poor communities in America.

a. History/origin of Goughing:

Apparently, Gouging was first developed in the United States of America mainly during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was essentially created as a form of a duel to defend an individual’s “honour”, and was mainly practiced by the economically “poor” communities especially belonging to the southern states.

b. Weapon used in the Goughing:

Basically “hands and legs” are used as a weapon in this form of martial art. Additionally, brutal tactics such as “biting” are also used as weapon in this combat form.

c. Technique involved in the Gouging and training availability:

In terms of technique, the fighter mainly uses “kicks” to overcome the opponent. Furthermore, brutal tactics such as “biting and scratching” are also used in this form of combat. In addition, “eye gouging” is yet another brutal strategy that is used commonly by a fighter. As for training centers/schools, there are none available around the world for this “hybrid and brutal” form of martial art.
